Bilibili's Subsidiary Is Officially Named "Shanghai Chunibyo Information Technology" — And It's Genius
In 2021, a Bilibili user doing their taxes noticed something unusual on a platform invoice. The issuing company was not the expected corporate boilerplate. It was: 上海中二信息科技有限公司 — Shanghai Chunibyo Information Technology Co., Ltd.
中二 (zhōng èr) is a direct borrowing from the Japanese term 中二病 (chūnibyō) — "eighth-grade syndrome." It refers to the adolescent phase of believing oneself uniquely special, misunderstood, and destined for greatness. In Chinese internet culture, 中二 is used affectionately: it means intensely passionate, unironically earnest, a little dramatic. It is Bilibili's entire emotional brand in two characters.
The subsidiary name was not an accident. It was a declaration.
What it means to encode personality in two characters
Most companies use their legal entity name as a technical formality — something to satisfy regulators and appear on contracts. Bilibili chose to use their subsidiary name as a brand statement. 中二 tells you immediately who this company is for and how it sees itself. No tagline needed. No mission statement. Two characters, and the identity is complete.
This is what master Chinese naming actually does. A well-chosen name is not a label; it is a compressed personality.
The same principle applies to personal names
Chinese given names operate on identical logic. Two characters — occasionally one — carry the weight of everything a parent hopes for a child. The characters chosen announce temperament before the child speaks a word:
- 瑾萱 (Jǐn Xuān) — jade virtue, day lily. Quiet, cultured, feminine grace.
- 博远 (Bó Yuǎn) — broad learning, far horizons. Ambitious, intellectual, outward-looking.
- 中二 — we already know this one. Earnest, passionate, slightly theatrical. Perfect for a platform where people post three-hour video essays about anime they love.
Each name is a personality hypothesis. The question is whether the characters you choose will still feel accurate twenty years later — when the child becomes the person you imagined, or surprises you entirely.
The risk of being too on-brand
Bilibili's 中二 works because it was chosen deliberately, with full knowledge of the cultural weight the term carries. But personality-encoded names carry a risk: they lock in an identity. A child named 豪杰 (háo jié, heroic and outstanding) faces quiet pressure to be both heroic and outstanding. A company named Chunibyo had better stay earnest and passionate — the name becomes a promise.
Before choosing a personality-encoding name, ask: is this a trait we want to define the person, or a phase we happen to find charming right now?
中二 as a naming lesson
What Bilibili got right was choosing a name that matches the core audience's self-image, not the company's self-image. 中二 is not how Bilibili describes itself to investors. It is how Bilibili's users describe themselves — with pride, with irony, with affection. The name is a mirror pointed at the community.
The best personal names work the same way. They reflect not who the parents are, but who they hope — with clear eyes — the child is becoming.
