Twelve ways the Chinese
craft a name

The scholar tradition: girls named from the Book of Songs (诗经), boys from the Songs of Chu (楚辞). Famous bearers: 王国维 (from《诗经》"王国克生，维周之桢"), 屠呦呦 (from "呦呦鹿鸣，食野之蒿"). A poetry-derived name carries a built-in story every educated Chinese speaker recognizes.

Marshal Liu Bocheng named his son 太行 (Taihang) for the mountains where he fought. Guo Moruo took his pen name from two rivers of his home, 沫水 and 若水. "仁者乐山，智者乐水" — the benevolent love mountains, the wise love water.

The cast of Chinese Paladin III — 徐长卿, 景天, 雪见, 龙葵, 紫萱, 重楼 — are all real medicinal herbs. Jiang Shuying's name 疏影 comes from Lin Bu's plum couplet "疏影横斜水清浅，暗香浮动月黄昏". Wu Jingzi (吴敬梓) and Cao Xueqin (曹雪芹) both carry plant characters.

Writer Xiao Hong (萧红) took "red" as her pen name for luck and brightness after years of hardship. Lin Qingxia (林青霞) pairs azure with rosy clouds. Zhu Ziyang (朱紫阳) — purple sunlight, the auspicious east. The rule: uncommon-but-related pairings create the strongest imagery.

Lao She (老舍) was born 腊月廿三, a week before Spring Festival — named 庆春, "celebrating spring". Tang Bohu: born in a 寅 (tiger) year, named 唐寅. Xie Lingyun (谢灵运), the first landscape poet, was named by his grandfather for "spiritual luck" — the Xie family had a history of early deaths and the boy was its hope. His life was extravagant, controversial — and lucky to the end. Luck names: direct (瑞瑞) or veiled (灵运).

Wang Xizhi (王羲之), the sage of calligraphy, named all seven sons with 之: 玄之, 凝之, 涣之, 肃之, 徽之, 操之, 献之. Over 20% of notable figures in the Song History carry a particle. Du Fu = 杜子美, Su Shi = 苏子瞻 — the particle makes the name.

Jin Yong (金庸), the greatest wuxia novelist, split his name 查良镛: the character 镛 splits into 金+庸. Lyricist Lin Xi (林夕): 林+夕 stack into 梦, dream — "sunset through the woods". Lyu Buwei's editor, Su Lao (老舍): 舒 = 舍+予, "give of oneself".

John Lone (尊龙), the abandoned child who became a Hollywood star, built his Chinese name from his English one: Lone → 龙 dragon, plus 尊 dignity. Entrepreneur Jia chose 贾思迈 (Simon Jia) — 思迈 sounds like "Simon" and reads "thoughtful, strides far". This is the method built for bicultural lives.
