Chinese Naming Taboos: Combinations to Avoid
Most bad Chinese names fail not in what they include but what they accidentally evoke. These are the failure modes — ranked by embarrassment factor.
1. Homophone disasters (谐音) — the #1 killer
Mandarin is dense with homophones; a name must be heard aloud before approved. Real examples of the genre:
- 杜子腾 Dù Zǐténg — lovely characters, but sounds exactly like 肚子疼 "stomachache."
- 史珍香 Shǐ Zhēnxiāng — "Shi fragrant-treasure," heard as 屎真香 "the poop smells great."
- Any name ending in 死 sǐ-adjacent sounds (思思 Sīsī borders this).
Check: say the full name fast three times. If anything funny surfaces in your head, a native will find it faster.
2. Tonal monotony
All-falling (4-4) names shout; all-low-dipping (3-3) mumble (and trigger tone sandhi confusion). Aim for movement: level→rising (1→2) or falling→rising (4→2) sound composed.
3. Dated or bureaucratic characters
| Character | Reads as |
|---|---|
| 建国, 卫东 | 1950s–60s political era |
| 铁柱, 大壮 | rural comic-book tough guy |
| 翠花, 淑芬 | "auntie" generation |
The opposite trap — chasing whatever celebrity just named their child — dates you within a decade.
4. Overloaded grandiosity
天地宇宙-style cosmic maximalism reads childish past age ten. Restraint signals confidence: 明远 (bright & far) beats 震天宇宙 (shake-heaven-universe) every time.
5. Gender-signal collisions
婷婷 on a man or 刚强 on a woman creates permanent awkwardness in forms, introductions, and job interviews. Unisex characters exist precisely because signals matter.
6. Foreigner-specific traps
- Full transliteration names (迈克尔·史密斯) read as paperwork aliases, not identities.
- Celebrity/brand theft — 成龙 for a 5'8" accountant invites gentle mockery.
- Food/object characters — 米 Mi is fine inside names but 饭 fàn (rice) is not.
The systematic fix
Every candidate in our engine passes taboo screening: unlucky homophone chains, tonal monotony, gender collisions — filtered before scoring ever begins. Craft forward, stumble never.
