The craft behind every couplet

What makes a real Chinese couplet?

Every couplet we generate follows the same rules Chinese scholars have followed for 2,000 years. You create — we enforce all of this automatically.

📏
Equal length — always Upper and lower lines must match character for character — not a single syllable off. Our generator rejects any pair that fails this test.
⚖️
Word-class mirroring Nouns face nouns, verbs face verbs, numbers face numbers. This positional parallelism is what gives a couplet its satisfying sense of balance.
🎵
仄起平收 (the tonal rule) The upper line ends on a 仄 tone (falling or dipping — 3rd or 4th tone), and the lower line ends on a 平 tone (level or rising — 1st or 2nd tone). This creates a classic arc from tension to resolution.
横批 — the summary scroll A horizontal scroll of 4–6 characters sits above the two lines and captures the whole couplet's theme in a single, pithy phrase — like a headline for your blessing.

Every couplet we generate is checked against all of these rules before you see it.

Questions

Chinese Couplets — Frequently Asked

A 对联 (duìlián) is a paired set of lines hung on doorposts or presented as gifts. Both lines must have equal character count, mirror word classes position-by-position, and follow strict tonal rules — upper line ends 仄 (oblique tone), lower ends 平 (level tone). A horizontal scroll (横批) summarizes the theme.
Not at all. You can describe your idea in plain English and the generator will produce an authentic Chinese couplet with full English translation and pronunciation. Many of our users create couplets as gifts for Chinese friends and colleagues without knowing any Chinese.
Chinese Spring Festival (New Year), weddings, business openings, birthdays, new home blessings and graduations are the most common. Red paper couplets hang on doorways and symbolize good fortune. They're also given as gifts — printed and framed, they make thoughtful, culturally meaningful presents.
Yes. The generator enforces 仄起平收 — upper couplet ends on 仄 (3rd or 4th tone), lower ends on 平 (1st or 2nd tone). This is the non-negotiable classical rule, and our AI is instructed to follow it strictly.
