Five Elements in Chinese Naming (Wǔxíng)
Five-element naming (五行 wǔxíng) is the most distinctive piece of traditional Chinese onomastics — and the part Westerners find most fascinating. Here's how it actually works, minus the mysticism-selling.
Step 1: Find your year element
Your birth year's last digit maps to an element via the sexagenary cycle:
| Last digit | Element | Example years |
|---|---|---|
| 0, 1 | Metal 金 | 1990, 1991, 2000, 2001 |
| 2, 3 | Water 水 | 1992, 1993, 2002, 2003 |
| 4, 5 | Wood 木 | 1984, 1985, 1994, 1995 |
| 6, 7 | Fire 火 | 1986, 1987, 1996, 1997 |
| 8, 9 | Earth 土 | 1988, 1989, 1998, 1999 |
(Purists use lunar-year boundaries and full bāzì charts including hour — that depth belongs to paid consultations; the year element alone already captures the tradition's core logic.)
Step 2: Apply the generating cycle
Elements feed and restrain each other in fixed cycles:
- Generating (相生): Wood→Fire→Earth→Metal→Water→Wood. Each element nourishes the next.
- Overcoming (相克): Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water douses Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal chops Wood.
Naming rule of thumb: favor characters whose element generates or matches yours.
- Metal year (e.g., 1990): Metal generates Water → favor Water characters like 泽 grace, 涵 contain, 沐 bathe.
- Fire year (e.g., 1996): Fire generates Earth → favor 坤 earth, 岩 rock, 安 peace.
- Water year (e.g., 1992): Water generates Wood → favor 林 forest, 楠 nanmu, 荣 flourish.
Avoid heavy doses of the element your element overcomes, and be cautious with the one that overcomes you.
Step 3: Read the radicals
An element isn't stated — it's shown in the character's radical (component):
- Water: 氵(泽, 涵), 水, 雨 radical
- Wood: 木, 艹 (林, 芳, 蕙)
- Fire: 火, 灬, 日 (炜, 熙, 晨)
- Metal: 金, 钅 (铭, 锦)
- Earth: 土, 山 (坤, 岚, 峻)
Does it "work"?
Honest answer: there is no scientific evidence elements affect destiny. But the practice persists because it produces better-balanced, more considered names — it forces families to think about composition rather than fashion. Treat it as cultural craft with a built-in quality process, not fortune-telling.
Try it
The generator applies the full generating-cycle scoring automatically when you enter your birth year — every result shows its element breakdown.
If you want to go deeper into the Five Elements framework beyond naming — how it applies to spaces, feng shui, and personal energy — ChineseFortuneTools has a dedicated Five Elements guide that covers the full generating and overcoming cycles.
