Jonathan Spence Named Himself "Admirer of Sima Qian." It Is the Most Beautiful Sinologist's Chinese Name Ever Made.

Jonathan Spence (1936–2021) spent his career writing books that brought Chinese history alive for English-speaking audiences. The Search for Modern China. The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci. The Gate of Heavenly Peace. He was Yale's Sterling Professor of History, one of the most celebrated China scholars of his era, and — in the judgment of many Chinese historians — the Westerner who best understood their country's past.

His Chinese name: 史景迁 (Shǐ Jǐngqiān).

Three characters. Every one of them doing exactly the right work.

The architecture of the name

史 (Shǐ) is a common Chinese surname. It also means "history" — the written record, the discipline, the practice of understanding the past through documentary evidence. For a historian, choosing this as a surname rather than a phonetic approximation of "Spence" is a statement of professional identity: I am the person who works with history.

景迁 (Jǐngqiān) means "admiring and emulating Sima Qian." 景 is used in names to mean "to look up to, to admire, to take as a model." 迁 is the second character of 司马迁 — Sima Qian, the Han Dynasty historian who wrote Records of the Grand Historian (史记, Shǐjì), the foundational text of Chinese historical writing. Sima Qian completed this monumental work after suffering severe punishment from the emperor — he chose to live and finish his history rather than die with his honour intact. The book remains, two thousand years later, the model for all subsequent Chinese historical writing.

史景迁 means: the historian who admires and emulates Sima Qian.

This is the Chinese name of someone who has thought carefully about what he is doing with his life and encoded that understanding into three characters.

Why the name succeeds at every level

It passes every test that a Chinese name must pass:

  • Reads as Chinese first: 史景迁 is immediately intelligible as a Chinese name to any Chinese speaker. The surname is real, the characters are standard, the combination is coherent.
  • Carries meaning specific to its bearer: The name would not be appropriate for a mathematician or a musician — it is precisely, specifically, the name of a historian with a particular relationship to the Chinese historiographical tradition.
  • Contains depth that rewards knowledge: A Chinese speaker who does not know Sima Qian sees an ordinary name. A Chinese speaker who recognises the allusion understands immediately that Spence knew what he was doing. The name operates at two levels simultaneously.
  • Connects without claiming: Spence did not name himself Sima Qian. He named himself the person who admires Sima Qian. The allusion honours the figure without claiming his identity.

What Spence's name teaches about the highest level of Chinese naming

Most foreigner Chinese names aim to be adequate: phonetically connected to the original name, semantically reasonable, not obviously embarrassing. Spence's name aims higher. It uses the name to make a declaration about vocation, about scholarly lineage, about what the person is for.

This is not necessary. An adequate Chinese name serves its purpose. But 史景迁 demonstrates what becomes possible when the naming process is taken seriously — when the question being answered is not "what characters sound like my name?" but "what characters describe, with maximum precision and beauty, who I actually am?"

The answer to that question, in two or three Chinese characters, is available to anyone willing to ask it carefully enough.
